UX Survey for LinkedIn Users

Updated: Mar 1, 2019

After a series of brainstorm and brief research on LinkedIn, it’s time to come up with a concrete project strategy to step-by-step lead forward to the product that meet users’ needs. I am using IDEO design thinking process.

The idea of interactive timeline will be set on the profile header on LinkedIn. In order to understand LinkedIn users’ perception and experience on the profile page, I decided to conduct a survey to collect their opinions.

These are some of the online resources I used to prepare a good and in-depth survey.

This is all you need to know to conduct a UX Survey

Better User Research Through Surveys

The important rules I learnt were:

- have a clear understanding of the needs and information required from the survey

- avoid leading questions

- group questions strategically

In the beginning, I focused so much on the possible features of an interactive timeline when preparing questions instead of understanding the users. After reading several guidelines on a good UX research survey, I realized that understanding the goals of the survey will significantly improve quality of questions as they will be strategically set to target at the areas that I need further insight or information. The data collected will be truly valuable for future analysis.

Here are the main goals of my survey:

How would the survey result help to:

- understand users’ feeling and experience on current profile header and profile landing page (useful for redesigning profile header)

- understand the scrolling habit on profile page

- identify the important info to be included on the interactive timeline (useful for content management)

- understand people’s definition on career progression. (useful for defining progression and creating a non-exaggerating staircase timeline)

Further to the last blog, I roughly thought about the difficulties when creating a timeline in the next stage.

Difficulties/Challenges to be solved

- What if a person has rich professional experience that the timeline is not long enough to accommodate?

- How to define and present career promotion in an objective and appropriate way?

- How to make the timeline simple, direct and intuitive as the interface area is limited?

I wrapped up the above issues and included these in the survey and hope to collect the views from the users for a clearer direction.

When thinking about the important information that can be featured on the interactive timeline, I planned to use ranking questions. Luckily, after I did some research and I found out there is a better way to ask this question for easy analysis – Likert scale.

After drafting the survey, I asked my close friend to do it in order to make sure the survey questions are presented in a direct and simple manner. As LinkedIn is widely used by people from different areas, I do not limit the survey participants background as long as they use LinkedIn. However, I also sent the survey to a group of headhunters, recruiters and HR professionals as they may be able to provide more insight given that they may use LinkedIn in recruitment process.
