Insight from User Research & Personas

MandyMan

After conducting an online survey and interviews with frequent LinkedIn users and recruiters, the following insights were found.

1. Frequent users use both mobile and desktop for browsing LinkedIn.

2. Recruiters always use desktop LinkedIn at work for easy reading and extracting information.

3. Around 50% respondents uploaded pictures for the profile banner and only 13.3% find it useful as a job profile element.

4. Almost 80% respondents always or sometimes scroll down to continue reading the whole profile after the profile header.

5. Education, current and previous employment are seen by respondents as the important content for a career overview. Half respondents thought skills, job duties and contact info are also important even if they have only 5-10 seconds to read one’s profile.

6. Link to portfolio or personal website is very important for several industries such as design.

7. 53.3% respondents are interested in 3-5 year previous employment.

8. Job promotion is the most acceptable reason among respondents as career progression.

I have created two personas to better understand the pain points, motivation and goals of using LinkedIn. Two personas represent my two target groups, recruiters and frequent LinkedIn users who see LinkedIn as a platform to present their professional experience.

Elaine is a Global UX Recruiter who uses LinkedIn frequently to seek potential candidates.

Florian is a Quantitative Researcher who uses LinkedIn to present his professional experience for better future career opportunities.

The next step will be brainstorming the features and visualization of the interactive timeline.
