Brainstorming ideas for UX data visualization project

Data visualization is a power tool on screen to showcase complicated or significant amount of data. In the module of Media Specialist Practice, each student has to specialize in one of the four areas (UX research - travel, branding, speculative design, data visualization) and I decided to choose data visualization as my specialized area. Not only is it a challenging area, data visualization is also a useful bridge for users to communicate with the data and thus obtaining useful information.

First inspiration

I did not have any project idea until my brother sent me an invitation on LinkedIn. When I saw the first landing page, I found that there was not much useful information shown that only current employment, education background and number of connections are available. I thought the first page could be further utilized to gain viewers’ attraction. After a brief research on LinkedIn, I observed that only a few people made use of LinkedIn banner which was a prime location to showcase useful information.

Only a few important info is shown on the first landing page

Many people don't change the profile banner.

The main aim of LinkedIn is to provide overview and detailed employment history especially for HR professionals or head hunter. Therefore, I came up the idea of presenting an interactive timeline on the LinkedIn banner as timeline is the most effective visualization tool to a display of a list of events in chronological order. This would be the direct way to highlight the overview of one’s employment history.
