Interactive Timeline on LinkedIn

Overview

This is a UX data visualization project for Media Specialist Practice module. By presenting an interactive timeline on LinkedIn, it aims to help LinkedIn users reduce information seeking time by offering an appealing career overview.

Motivation

  • Can the current LinkedIn profile header (banner photo) be fully utilized?

  • How to present text-filled information in a visualized and interactive way to facilitate users in information seeking process?

Process

  • IDEO design thinking process was adopted.

  • Quantitative and qualitative user research was conducted including online survey and interviews to understand users’ feeling and experience on current profile header and profile landing page, scrolling habit on profile page, identify the important info to be included on the interactive timeline, people’s definition on career progression to develop a non-exaggerating timeline.

  • Recruiters and frequent users who want to present an impressive profile are the target audience. Two personas were made to understand their needs and pain points.

Persona

Design rationale

  • Intuitive and KISS (Keep it Simple, Stupid) approach were adopted in order to achieve high usability, that is easy to learn, effective to present information and efficient to seek information.

  • Data visualization guidelines (IBM Data Visualization & Office for National Statistics Data Visualization Guideline) were studied and colour blindness simulator (Coblis) was used to make the timeline more accessible.

  • Interactive prototype was built using Figma and below was the first design.

Prototype & User feedback

First version of the timeline

  • Usability test was conducted and three people provided feedback and insights.

  • An in-class presentation was held in late March and I collected more feedback.

  • Redesign was conducted based on user feedback to improve the design (see blog for the reasons)

  • Usability test and user interview were taken place again to collect feedback on the revised design (go to the top for the video).

Final version

  • Overall, users were positive about the interactive timeline which itself served as a useful feature. It was easy to use and helped to facilitate information seeking process.

Below is the comment by a recruiter:
"Overall it's really a pleasant experience! Flicking between the timeline and the information was useful, definitely speeds up the recruitment process."
